The chemical conversion of pollutants in vehicle emissions requires strongly increasing effort of classic chemical procedures in the future. Dielectric barrier discharge is an effective non-classic method to stimulate chemical reactions. On account of newer research results in the field of barrier discharge and with novel compact control units it is possible to realize this kind of discharge system in compact structures, e.g. for the use in a vehicle. The use of barrier discharge for a lean-combustion spark-ignition engine exhaust aftertreatment has been investigated.
