Even though an effective reduction of pollutants into municipal solid waste is seen as an important goal in solid waste policy the priorities are unclear as to which substances and products to regulate. The first step in this study was therefore the development of a priority setting method which allows a well-founded and transparent hierarchy setting for the relevance of pollutants in solid waste. For 21 priority pollutants the input into solid waste through products was determined. Since existing data on waste analysis was insufficient, the life-cycles of pollutants were determined using data on production of raw and processed materials up to their use in households.
