Bewertung der Reinigungswirkung im Trinkwasseraufbereitungsgang belasteter Rohwaesser mittels Toxizitaetstests am Beispiel der Dresdner Elbwasserwerke Schlussbericht

Resources of clean ground water and surface water are insufficient for the production of drinking water in eastern Germany. For that reason, river bank-filtrated water or infiltrate are used additional. Hygienic problems are resulting by that. A rest risk is staying for health, although modern water purification equipment get used. Keeping of limit values does not guarantee complete security, because interactions between substances get not detected in chemical analyses. Only direct toxicological examinations are suitable for this purpose. A micro variant of cytotoxicity test using cultures of the human FL-cell line was developed as a result of project implementation. Inhibition of cell proliferation serve as toxicity criterion after long time cultivation. For this, living cells are incubated with the dye Thiazolyl-blue (MTT). After that cell count relations of trial and control are detected by photometry. Suitability of cytotoxicity test was proved on practical conditions. An annual study in 4 water treatment works and a comprehensive investigation of bank filtration in a selected water plant were carried out. The test system allowed to realize significant place dependent and time dependent differences of water samples' cytotoxicity. Results of a correlation study concerning cytotoxicity and parameters of chemical analyses showed weak connections in same cases. The cytotoxicity test is unsuitable for routine examinations of individual water samples. But it is suitable for risk assessment during test periods of new built or reconstructed water treatment plants.
