The distribution of organic soil pollutants in hazardous waste sites, such as aromatic, aliphatic, halogenated or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons is very inhomogeneous. An effective assessment of a contaminated area requires processing a large number of soil samples. In an effort to minimize time delays due to sample transport and tedious laboratory sample preparation and analysis, new on-site methods were developed on the basis of employing a mobile gaschromatograph-mass-spectrometer (MM1). Analytical data is available within 2-10 min after sampling. A typical throughput is 60 analyses per day. Soil air is sampled on Tenax and analyzed by thermal-desorption-GC-MS.
