For the rehabilitation of the Hamburg-Georgswerder landfill, the oil phases of the former oil ponds (pond oil) and those phases seeping out of the embankment (seepage oil) represent a major problem because of the high content of organic pollutants (e.g. 2,3,7,8-TCDD). As a rehabilitation measure for pond and seepage oil, solidification is a possible technique which was investigated in this project. A variety of additives was tested including inorganic and organic binders, fillers and, in some experiments, also surfactants.
