The clearance of buildings of nuclear facilities, which were dealing with nuclear fuel, is characterized by enhanced operation of in-situ measuring methods for release. In spite of the well known chain of sample collection, sample preparation and laboratory analysis, in-situ- techniques are more representative. In the past, surface contamination monitors and the in-situ-gamma-spectroscopy were used for the characterization of contamination by heavy metals, such as uranium, thorium and plutonium. Both methods are able to produce specific data from different depth of the object (sample) and for different averaging areas after a carefully calibration procedure.
