Electrophysiological properties of different subunits of cyclic nucleotide-gated ion channels (cng-channels) have been characterized: a Drosophila cng-channel (DmCNGC#alpha#) present in eyes and antennae and the #alpha#-subunits br CNGC#alpha#, bc CNG Cd, bo CNG C#alpha# of bovine cng-channels. It is demonstrated that profoundly different calcium permeation and blockage determine the specific function of distinct cng-channels. From stimulation studies on sperm of strongylocentrotus purpuratus and Arbacia punctulata indications are derived that cng-channels are involved in the ovum peptide-induced signal transduction in sperm.
