Langfristiges Gefaehrdungspotential und Deponieverhalten von Ablagerungen Abschlussbericht

Within the project of the TU Hamburg-Harburg, Department of Waste Management, in the joint research project 'Landfill Body' the long-term emissions and the risk potential of old deposits were investigated with extensive laboratory tests. With landfill simulation tests, which were to show the coherence between the waste components, the age and milleu conditions of deposition and the resulting course of emissions, the medium and long-term behaviour of landfill bodies should be predictable. Moreover procedures to accelerate conversion processes in landfills were developed in laboratory scale and tested to assess their effectivity. Solid waste samples of different ages of deposition (1962-1988) were obtained by drillings in several old landfills being investigated as follows: chemical-physical investigations of the solid waste, respiration tests to determine the remaining biological activity and successive leaching tests according to the German DEV-S4 procedure. The main focus of the research programme was put on test series in 'landfill simulation reactors' (LSR). They were carried out under anaerobic and aerobic conditions to simulate the predominant conditions as well as the long-term transition to aerobic conditions in landfills. With the LSR-laboratory tests the long-term processes that take place in landfills were performed in an accelerated time-scale. The results of the research programme give many indications concerning the period of aftercare and the necessary aftercare measurements. Depending on the water table in landfills decades or even centuries may pass before the contamination of the leachate decreases to a level that its environmental impact will be acceptable. Laboratory scale tests with controled aeration to promote an accelerated in-situ stabilization of landfill bodies indicate a significant reduction of freights into the leachate phase that can be released in the long run. Furthermore the periods of release which determine the period of the aftercare can be shortened for some relevant leachate parameters.
