Subject of this study are the environmental impacts of landfills for municipal solid waste and the possibilities to influence them by means of waste management and site planning. This approach reflects upon the multibarrier concept, as it is fixed in the German technical regulations for municipal solid waste, the 'Technische Anleitung Siedlungsabfall (TASi)'. According to this concept, three independent barriers shall reduce the environmental impacts of the landfill: the election of (hydro-) geologically qualified sites, technical means like containments, and - last not least - the pretreatment of the waste itself.
