The ''Simulation of transport and chemical transformation of aircraft emissions in the tropopause'' (STRATFLUT) project was designed to investigate transport and chemical transformation of aircraft emission on the mesoscale. This include the study of air mass exchange between upper stratosphere and lower troposphere. Tropopause foldings and cold air droplets play a special role in this exchange because they may be accompagnied by deep intrusions of stratospheric air into the troposphere and simultaneously by mass flows in the stratosphere that flow in opposite direction.
