The paper starts with the definition and description of the properties of glass interesting for an application as structural element. Tests and considerations finally lead to a hypothesis for fracture of flat glass. The behaviour of laminated glass as visco-elastic connected, on temperature depending structural elements (beams as well as plates) is described using results of testing; different methods for the calculation of such elements are explained. After presenting the existing concepts for design it is shown how structural elements of glass with respect to different influence factors can be dimensioned. As an example a comfortable method is presented. (orig.)SIGLEAvailable from TIB Hannover: RR 275(1999,5) / FIZ - Fachinformationszzent...
