The gas-surface interaction of the internal degrees of freedom, especially those of the rotation, in rarefied NO+He- and NO+N_2 free jets on a technical silicon carbide (SiC)-surface is studied in a wind tunnel. For reentry conditions of a space vehicle in the aerodynamic transition regime between free molecular flow and continuum at high wall temperature and high flow velocity, it is found that the rotational temperature of the scattered NO molecules is lower than the surface temeprature, i.e. not completely accommodated. Up to now, this has not been considered in computer simulation models of reentry with respect to the prediction of thermal loads. The rotational energy distribution at the surface is discussed by theoretical models of ine...
