The characteristic properties of wood concerning the influence of water are the volume change at moisture variation and the fact that water transport across the grain is much slower than along the grain. Water uptake depends both on the direction and on the dimension of the wooden structures. If water uptake and water desorption can occur via the same surfaces, the wood moisture content is not strongly influenced by coatings and shrinkage shakes.
