Demands and selection of wood coatings strongly depend on the kind of wood, its processing and the climatic conditions. The characteristic properties of wood concerning the influence of water are the volume change at moisture variation and the fact that water transport across the grain is much slower than along the grain. Water uptake depends both on the direction and on the dimension of the wooden structures. If water uptake and water desorption can occur via the same surfaces, the wood moisture content is not strongly influenced by coatings and shrinkage shakes. However, in the case that water uptake proceeds along the grain, while desorption takes place only across the grain, coatings impervious to water prevent the drying thus enhancing damage processes in the wood.
