Every water purification plant using membrane systems under non-sterile conditions carries a biofilm, which participates in the separation process as a secondary membrane. Attempts to inhibit biofouling address the forces involved in primary adhesion. In a model system, P. diminuta adhesion to a polyethersulfone membrane was investigated. Adhesion is governed by the EPS consisting of polysaccharides and proteins. Denaturation of EPS (heat, UV) inhibits the adhesion. Chaotrophic and surface active agents reduced the adhesion rate significantly indicating that hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions are major adhesion forces.
