Within the framework of the Component safety Programme, acoustic emission measurements have been done during submerged arc welding work on a thick plate made of 20 MnMoNi 55, bearing artificial flaws induced at selected spots. Earlier measurements by Messrs. GATX, U.S.A. have shown that the artificial cracks - but not the pores - are detected by online acoustic emission testing. This method therefore is suitable in general as a welding work monitoring method, allowing to do repair welds after completion of beads, before completion of the welded joint.
