PRARE auf METEOR-3 Schlussbericht

The PRARE system is a high-precision measuring system for determining the position and relative velocity of a satellite and its ground stations. The measuring principle of the device is based on group, delay and carrier phase measurements of digital microwave signals in the S and X bands. The preparations of the PRARE project on ERS-1 included a series of investigations into technical system verification for a long-term analysis and for operational analysis. A failure of the PRARE onboard hardware on ERS-1 caused a delay in this important engineering and scientific activity. The METEOR-3 mission, with the planned launch of a satellite in summer 1993, offered a very good opportunity for this, both with regard to the time window and to engineering/science aspects. After the launch had to be postponed several times until late in January 1994, among others due to technical problems in the rocket launcher, the launch eventually took place on 25 January 1994. On 31 January 1994, during the 64th orbit after its launch, PRARE was activated and has been operating nominally since then.
