Thermal expansion is one of the properties of all materials which is important for both theory and practice. Ist interconnection with compressibility, mechanical stress, pressure, electric and magnetic properties and its dependence on the state of solids, which may be amorphous, composite, polycrystalline or crystalline with various symmetries is demonstrated by formulas and diagrams from literature. According to the wide range of temperatures from about 1 K to 4000 K, a wide variety of relative and absolute methods to measure thermal expansion is mentioned without, however, reference being made to all variants.
