Inserts in silos are used to change the flow pattern which again influences the stress distribution in the bulk material and silo wall loads. Since the failure rate of silo structures is rather high, it has been recognized as being very important to analyse the flow and stress behaviour of the bulk material and the wall normal stress distribution of such silos. For an experimental study, measurements have been carried out by Strusch at a model silo of the Institute of Mechanical Process Engineering (Technische Universitaet Braunschweig).
