Soil dynamics with experimental, analytical and numerical methods are subject of research activities at the Geotechnical Institute of the TU Berlin during the past fifty years. In review to the research at the Institute, the activities of Prof. H. Lorenz in the 50s and 60s prepares the basics for many following scientific works. While in the past analytical methods to describe the soil as a halfspace are applied, today numerical methods are introduced, which are much more flexible in modelling the soil as a layered or halfspace media. These developments accompanied the fast growth of modern computers. Today, problems that seemed to be unsolved before, can now be solved with acceptable efforts by numerical procedures.
