The properties of ceramic Si_3N_4 powders from different sources have been characterized concerning their behaviour in ceramic powder forming. For the description of compaction and flow behaviour of ceramic powders at multi axial load a micromechanical model has been developed. Compaction during the dry-pressing was simulated by finite element calculations using the Drucker-Prager Cap model for granular materials. Pressure-density relationships and material hardening were experimentally followed during the pressing process of rotationally symmetrical bodies, and the structure of the green bodies were characterized by light microscopic and REM investigations.
