In this paper, we give an overview of basic systems and procedures of production planning and control. We start with a comparison of the pull logic, as being implemented in conventional production planning and control systems, and the KANBAN-based push principle. Next, we discuss how to design production control modules for different types of production systems, like job shops, flexible manufacturing systems, and flow line production. Finally, we review recent developments of scheduling procedures.
