In this study ground source heat exchangers for the conditioning of ingoing air for residential buildings are examined. For this purpose an analytical approximation of the temperature field in the ground surrounding the buried heat exchanger pipe is computed. The most important of the free parameters that influence the thermal output of the ground source heat exchanger are depth under surface and the length of the heat exchanger pipe. At a certain laying depth, which depends on the thermal properties of the ground, the annual quantities of heat and cold generated by the ground source heat exchanger reach a maximum.
