Low-density polyethylene and amorphous polystyrene as model materials have been subjected to low-temperature plasma and to ion beam treatment at controlled ion energy distribution function at the discharge electrode and with different ion sources (Ar, O_2, CF_4). Polymer modification and depth profiles were studied by ftir, ellipsometry, in situ microgravimetry and XPS. A direct effect of VUV irridation could be excluded. The kind of ion source strongly influences the polymer degradation. Under remote conditions as compared to the direct effect of plasma and ion beams the polymer degradation degree is strongly reduced, and with oxygen as the process gas more defined carbonyl structures are obtained.
