Hahn-Meitner-Institut, Theoretical Physics. Scientific report 1995-1996

The first annual report of the Department of Theoretical Physics covered the year 1994, which was the first year of its existence as an independent department. Herewith, we present the Scientific Report 1995-1996. The Department of Theoretical Physics is subdivided into the two sections 'Many-Body Theory' and 'Solid-State Physics'. These are coordinated with the two fields of central interest in the Hahn-Meitner-Institut, namely 'Structure and Dynamics of Condensed Matter' (associated mainly with the research reactor) and 'Solar Energy Research'. Within the Section Many-Body Theory, the work is characterized by the transition from heavy-ion nuclear and atomic physics to topics related to structural research pursued in other departments of the Institute. In the field of nuclear physics, the disintegration and fission of hot nuclei is studied, while in atomic physics attention is focussed on relativistic ion-atom collisions, in particular on radiative electron capture and on electron-positron pair production. Within the Section Solid-State Theory, the reorientation towards the fields of central interest in the Insitute has made considerable progress. The inversion methods for the interpretation of neutron reflection data have been developed with particular attention to the determination of the reflection phase, and the study of the microstructure of metal alloys and its stability away from equilibrium has been continued.
