We have studied the interaction of an arbitrary number Z of atoms with a quantized damped resonator mode. In order to reduce the dimension of the system we employed a symmetrized density operator description. These density operators are analogous to angular momentum eigenstates which are usually referred to as Dicke states.In this symmetric basis the dimension of the atomic system is only 1/6(Z+1)(Z+2)(Z+3) in contrast to 4"Z without symmetrization. We have shown that the symmetry is not broken by spontaneous emission. A simple analytical expression for the matrix elements of the complete Liouville operator with respect to the Dicke states was found.
