In June 1994 the Arctic Lidar Observatory for Middle Atmosphere Research (ALOMAR) started operation with first measurements by the ALOMAR Rayleigh/Mie/Raman-Lidar (R/M/R-Lidar). The observatory, located on the Andoeya Rocket Range (69 N, 16 E) in northern-Norway, was established as an international research facility comprising active and passive remote sensing instruments measuring atmospheric parameters. The optical design of the R/M/R lidar is described. Early results include the first ever simultaneous and common-volume detection of noctilucent clouds by the lidar and polar mesosphere summer echoes by a MST radar, giving observational evidence for a common origin of these upper atmosphere phenomena.
