Bulk superconducting YBCO materials can be applied for the generation of magnetic fields (11,4 T, IFW Dresden) considerably higher than those of permanent magnets. At low temperatures the maximum possible fields are not reached due to thermomagnetic instabilities during the magnetisation process. The report discusses the origin of the instabilities and shows how to avoid them. Important parameters for the behaviour of the superconductors in increasing magnetic fields are the ratio of thermal diffusivity to magnetic diffusivity, the field changing rate and the coupling to a thermal bath.
