We present a simple self-consistent model of the helicon discharge taking into account the RF power absorbed by the electrons from the helicon wave field as well as particle and energy conservation. For a long discharge in which radial particle and energy losses predominate, we derive a relation which reveals, in particular, a linear dependence between the plasma density and the magnetic field strength roughly observed in experiment.
