The oxidative potential of a cold plasma in off-gases from engines with oxygen excess results in an effective conversion of NO to NO_2, that can be converted synergetically to molecular nitrogen with appropriate catalysts in a selective catalystic reduction (SCR) of NOx, both with NH_3 and hydrocarbons. The combination of SCR and cold plasma enhances the overall reaction and allows an effective removal of NOx at relatively low temperatures. Without any reductive material, the plasmacatalytic abatement of NOx in excess oxygen containing off-gases is not satisfying. The analysis of the isotopic distribution in the reaction products using labelled compounds as starting materials allows conclusions regarding the mechanism of the removal as well...
