Within the European Fusion Technology Program for ITER (international thermonuclear experimental reactor) several materials were investigated with respect to their bulk and weld properties between 4.2 and 7 K during the period 1997 and 2000. The investigated materials were the superalloy Incoloy 908 foreseen as the jacket material for superconducting ITER central solenoid conductor and stainless steel of the Type 316LN series. A data base for the developed new cryogenic structural material, a modified Type 316LN heavy cast steel material, foreseen for the use of moderate stressed parts of the ITER full size coil casing was established.
