The heavy-ion storage ring ESR and the trap for highly-charged ions Super-EBIT open up unique possibilities for the study of the effects of quantum electrodynamics (QED) in the domain of strong electric fields. Here, higher-order corrections can be investigated which are not accessible for low-Z ions. In this review special emphasis is given to x-ray spectroscopic investigations of the ground-state transition energies in high-Z hydrogen-like ions up to H-like uranium. By using the intense beams of cooled heavy ions provided by the storage ring ESR, these experiments allow for a precise study of the ground-state binding-energies in high-Z H-like ions where the effects of QED are strongest.
