Determination of mass. Pt. 1 Dissemination of the unit of mass - balances, weights weights and test rooms

For several years, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) has published translations of metrological papers. They chiefly cover research results from PTB laboratories, specify testing rules for certain measurement procedures and facilitate access to German legal requirements for measuring instruments and to verification regulations for an international circle of interested parties. By far the greatest number of translations are available in English; other papers have been translated into Spanish and Portuguese. The report entitled 'Dissemination of the Unit of Mass - Balance, Weights and Test Rooms' represents the first part of a publication in the field of the determination of mass. The second part describes the legal requirements and test procedures which the PTB takes as a basis for accepting balances for verification (pattern approval). Both reports have been drawn up in close cooperation with employees of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, the verification authorities and industry. We wish to thank all authors for their contributions. These reports are not only addressed to foreign manufacturers of balances who apply to the PTB for pattern approval of their measuring instruments. In particular, they provide information to the national metrology institutes of those countries which are about to establish a metrology service on their own. Within the scope of technical cooperation, members of the PTB have already made important contributions in countries whose industrial development is at an early stage. They will continue to be available in an advisory capacity to the best of their abilities.
