The publication reports work for development and optimization of single-layer, planar SQUID gradiometers based on high-Tc superconductors that can be applied to measurement of weak magnetic field gradients in non-shielded environments. The preparatory studies are also reported, relating to the properties of the examined Josephson contacts at T = 77K (or T>60 K at ion-beam modified microbridges), the temperature dependence of London's penetration depth, and the suitable layout variants. The properties of the gradiometers consisting of YBa_2Cu_3O_7 layers are explained.
