The known Rapid Prototyping techniques are generally limited to non-metallic materials. The manufacturing of functional prototypes requires methods for the processing of high-strength metal alloys. Therefore, objective of the project was to build-up the technological base for the new technique of 3D-laser-cladding. Using this technique, the production of metallic prototypes as well as cladding of complex shaped surfaces become possible. Within the scope of the project, a special laser system, consisting of a machine tool, a CO_2-slab-laser and powder feeder technology was built.
