From a study of the literature on ion beam synthesis of nanocrystals covering the period 1990-95, the following (1-4) conclusions have been drawn: (1) there exists a broad empirical knowledge on the generation of Cu, Ag and Au metal clusters and of Si and Ge semiconductor clusters. (2) Contrary to the situation described under (1), only few is known on nanocluster synthesis of semiconducting III-V and II-VI materials and on ionic semiconductor synthesis by ion implantation. Research activities in this field are connected with high risks and with a large innovation potential. (3) Additional knowledge on cluster growth kinetics has to be establish by combined in-situ electron beam and ion beam experiments. (4) Potential main field of research...
