The fundamental problems of the formation of scattering centers and of valency changes of the doping ions during growth of laser crystals has been investigated and solved for fluorides by various methods. Fluoride crystals with LiCaAlF_6-structure have been successfully grown and tested in lasing operation. These crystals can be doped with high chromium concentrations without deterioration of the crystal quality. They are exceptionally good laser crystals and suitable for diode pumping. The growth of YLiF_6-crystals as particularly good hosts for rare earth ions was also successful. An entirely new kind of stoichiometric manganese crystals has been developed.
