Optical and magnetooptical investigations are reported for metal atoms in a matrix of superfluid or solid helium. Helium as a trapping material for neutral atoms was studied. Results are given for the implantation of atoms, for their trapping lifetime in helium and for factors limiting the capure time. The influence of helium on optical spectra of trapped atoms as well as their spin relaxation are discussed theoretically and experimentally. For the experiments a helium double bath cryostat with large area optical aperture was developed. The implantation of atoms was realised using the recombination method.
