Within this work spectroscopic studies of Gadolinium and Samarium by multi-step resonance ionization were carried out, significantly extending the application of RIMS in complex atomic systems. In Samarium isotope shift and hyperfine structure of the first resonant transition were investigated and in addition, long, undisturbed Rydberg series just below the first ionization limit were measured for the first time. For the strongest one the limit of convergence was determined and an isotope specific ionization energy of IP=45519.30793(43) cm-1 for "1"5"4Sm was derived.
