The introduction of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy into the clinical praxis requires the broadband measurement of signals with very high amplitudes (> 100 MPa) and with rapid pressure increase (about 1 ns) besides signals of small and medium amplitudes. For calibration purposes in this work a fiber optic interferometric sensor has been developed as a reference hydrophone. Interferometric properties and mechansims of acoustic wave propagation have been studied, and their influences on the measured signal is described.
