He scattering experiments on large Ar and NH_3 clusters (N#>=#10) were carried out using an universal molecular beam apparatus. The medium cluster size was derived from calculated and measured He diffraction oscillation. For the first time the vibrational excitation of large Ar clusters was experimentally determined, and differences in the excitation of NH_3 clusters could be attributed to the rotational degrees of freedom. From measurements of the velocity distribution, the total differential cross-section and the flying time the existence of two types of Ar monomers were deduced: free monomers and monomers evaporated from the clusters.
