Spectroscopy of neutron rich nuclei produced in deep inelastic processes

Deep-inelastic processes which occur when 234 MeV "3"7Cl ions interact with a thick target of "1"6"0Gd have been used to populate a number of neutron-rich projectile- and target-like nuclear species. The EUROBALL IV array of escaped-suppressed germanium detectors was used to study the #gamma# radiation emitted from the excited nuclear fragments. The yrast states of the following projectile-like species have been studied in the work: "3"2","3"3","3"4Si, "3"3","3"4","3"5P, "3"6","3"8S, "3"6","3"7","3"9","4"0","4"1Cl, "4"0","4"2Ar and "4"2","4"3","4"4K. Rotational decay sequences up to spin 30 have been studied for the following target-like species: "1"5"0","1"5"1","1"5"2Sm, "1"5"2","1"5"4","1"5"5","1"5"6","1"5"8Gd and "1"5"6","1"5"7","1"5"8","1"5"9","1"6"0","1"6"1","1"6"2Dy. For the light nuclear systems we have added a number of new transitions to earlier reported work. The ability to extend yrast sequences to spins greater than about 6 or 7 is limited by Doppler effects. Comparisons have been made with the results of shell model calculations and, in general, there is good agreement. However not all observed states have counterparts in the available shell model calculations. For a number of target-like nuclei we have been able to extend the known decay sequences to considerably larger angular momentum. Comparisons with the results of cranked shell model calculations are generally good, but there are some significant disagreements for, for example, the yrast decay sequences of "1"6"2Dy and "1"5"8Gd. However, the projected shell model, with a considerably increased quadrupole deformation parameter, is able to account for the delayed AB crossing in the yrast sequence of "1"6"2Dy.
