A protocol for heart rate variability (HRV) analysis was established and tested on 2 transgenic mouse strains. First, we showed that mice overexpressing the superoxide dismutase 1 presented an increase in HRV associated with high prevalence of atrioventricular blocks. These disturbances of cardiac rhythm could be explained by a diminution of cardiac acetylcholinesterase activities leading to an increase in parasympathetic tone. Mice overexpressing the beta2 adrenergetic receptor developed a phenotype of heart failure with a diminished HRV, a higher incidence of spontaneous and electro-inducible ventricular arrhythmias.
