TRPA1 je jediným zástupcem ankyrinové podrodiny TRP (transient receptor potential) iontových kanálů. Tento iontový kanál je převážně exprimován na senzorických neuronech, v srdci, mozku a plicních fibroblastech, kde může být aktivován podněty různých senzorických modalit, včetně širokého spektra dráždivých nebo pálivých látek, které potenciálně ohrožují živý organismus: isothiokyanáty, akrolein, cinnamal a jeho deriváty, nikotin a různé produkty oxidativního stresu. Kromě těchto chemických látek může být TRPA1 kanál také aktivován a současně inaktivován nitrobuněčnými vápenatými ionty. Přesné mechanizmy těchto regulačních dějů jsou však zatím neobjasněné.
