La mise en place du plan d organisation segmenté des vertébrés, visible notamment au niveau de la colonne vertébrale, se fait pendant l embryogenèse précoce. Les segments, appelés somites, sont formés périodiquement à partir du mésoderme paraxial présomitique (PSM). La compréhension, d une part des mécanismes moléculaires de spécification du PSM, d autre part de la morphogenèse somitique, est un enjeu majeur afin de comprendre la formation des segments.
