Jago and preman - controversial heroes of Indonesian history

Práce se zabývá historickým vývojem banditismu a gangsterismu v Indonésii na pozadí vztahů s vládnoucí elitou. Autor vyvozuje, že bandité zvaní jago, resp. gangsteři známí pod názvem preman představovali opěrný pilíř moci všech vládnoucích režimů na Jávě od klasických javánských království, přes nizozemský koloniální stát až po Suhartův autokratický Nový řád. S nástupem decentralizace a demokratizace indonéské politiky v roce 1998 došlo k zásadní změně tohoto paradigmatu - nájemní gangsteři preman přestali být agenty státu a stali se mocenským nástrojem politických stran a dalších konkurenčních zájmových skupin. Autor rovněž dokládá, že prostřednictvím integrace zločinců do svých represivně-kontrolních systémů se režimy snažily jejich kriminální aktivity eliminovat. Obecným projevem těchto integračních snah byla kriminalizace pořádkových složek a nepřímo i státní administrativy všech popsaných režimů. Disertant dále dokazuje, že mezi jagy a premany existuje přímá historická a kulturní souvislost a že navzdory značnému vzájemnému časovému odstupu tyto kontroverzní postavy indonéských dějin stále vykazují tři základní společné rysy: spolupráce s patronem na ambivalentní bázi; kriminální aktivity mimo tuto linii, z nichž elity výměnou za zajištění jejich beztrestnosti finančně profitovaly; zpravodajská a...The dissertation deals with the historical development of banditry and gangsterism in Indonesia against the background of its relationship with the ruling elite. The author argues that bandits, called jago, or modern gangsters, known as preman, represented the basic pillar of power of all ruling regimes in Java from the classical Javanese kingdoms and the 163 Netherlands East Indies' colonial state to the Suharto's New Order. This pattern changed, however, with the onset of decentralisation and democratization of Indonesian politics - thugs for hire ceased to be agents of state and became a power tool of political parties and other competing interest groups. The author also shows that the regimes tried to eliminate the thugs' criminal activities by integrating them into their respective repressive systems. The general consequence of these intergrational attempts was criminalization of security forces and the state administration. The author further proves the existence of a direct historical and cultural connection between the jago and the preman.
