Iniciace transkripce patří ke stěžejním krokům genové exprese. Přepis genetické informace z DNA do RNA zajišťuje vícepodjednotkový enzym RNA polymeráza (RNAP). Avšak samotná RNAP není schopná rozpoznat specifický promotor a iniciovat transkripci. K tomuto účelu slouží bakteriím protein zvaný faktor σ, který se na RNAP váže a spolu tvoří holoenzym RNAP. V této práci popisuji mechanismus bakteriální transkripce a dále stavbu, funkci a regulaci faktorů σ. Zaměřuji se hlavně na primární faktory σ u dvou významných modelových druhů, a to u gramnegativní Escherichia coli a grampozitivního Bacillus subtilis.
