: Cholin slouží ve všech savčích buňkách jako prekurzor pro syntézu hlavního membránového fosfolipidu fosfatidylcholinu a jako donor acetylových skupin. V cholinergních neuronech je navíc nezbytným prekurzorem neuromediátoru acetylcholinu. Schopnost buněk syntetizovat vlastní cholin nestačí pro jejich potřeby a tak musí být významná část cholinu vychytávána z extracelulárního prostředí. Omezení dostupnosti cholinu v mozku vede specificky k oslabování funkce cholinergních neuronů a obecně k poruchám obnovování membrán u všech buněk. Poruchy funkce cholinergní signalizace a související nervové činnosti jsou charakteristické pro Alzheimerovu nemoc.
