Les alliages CoCrMo présentent une bonne résistance à la corrosion en milieu physiologique. Elle est due à la formation, à leur surface, d un film passif constitué d oxydes de chrome de cobalt et de molybdène. Ce film de quelques nanomètres d épaissuer est malheureusement sujet à la destruction mécanique sous l effet du frottement. L alliage est alors exposé à l agressivité de ce milieu et subit une forte dissolution. Les ions ainsi formés sont relargués dans les tissus environnants des prothèses et provoquent des réactions inflammatoires.
