Laptops, sounds and massive data. A media perspectiva and application to post‐digital algorithmic sound art practices

[EN] It’s been almost two decades from the 10th Digital Show in New York and the article that Benjamin Weill (2002) wrote about this same one for the Leonardo magazine of the MIT as an attendee. In his article he wrote in a captivating way about the panorama that he detected. he pointed how digital technologies had completely filtered into culture in just a single decade, and how digital art was exponentially expanding, like a generative system, by spreading itself to all artistic disciplines and thus highlighting that the influence of technology, in all areas of artistic creation and production, it’s being only increasing since then (Cádiz 2012). Specifically, this text aims to address, in a synthetic way and with a medial perspective, the evolution of post‐digital algorithmic sound artistic practices. It proposes that the electrical phenomenon that Marshall McLuhan pointed out was not only an appearance, but instead, that the digital devices, their shape, the way we manipulate them, the moment in which we do it and their ability to build new creative objects –in particular sound, based on computational and algorithmic use– reveal the importance of the concepts of time, data, post‐production and direct and indirect interaction applied to the sound realm. This writing proposes to value and put in perspective these conceptual events, an in this way, contribute to generate a picture of the sound that becomes musical and is mediated by the technological, the computational and the incidence of data as a virtuous element of it’s formulation.[ES] Hace casi dos décadas se celebraba el décimo Salón Digital de Nueva York. Tras asistir a esta, Benjamin Weill (2002) escribía de manera cautivadora para la revista Leonardo del MIT el panorama que había detectado. Apuntaba asombrado que en una sola década las tecnologías digitales se habían filtrado completamente en la cultura y cómo el arte digital había proliferado de forma exponencial, como si de un sistema generativo se tratara, extendiéndose a todas las disciplinas artísticas y dejando de manifiesto que la influencia de la tecnología, en todos los ámbitos de la creación y producción artística, no ha hecho más que incrementarse (Cádiz, 2012). En concreto este texto aborda de manera sintética y con una perspectiva medial la evolución de las prácticas artísticas sonoras algorítmicas post-digitales proponiendo que el fenómeno eléctrico que Marshall McLuhan apuntaba, no era solo una apariencia, sino que tanto los dispositivos digitales, la forma y modo como los manipulamos, el momento en el que lo hacemos y su capacidad de construir nuevos objetos creativos, en particular sonoros, a partir del uso computacional y algorítmico dejan de manifiesto la importancia del concepto de tiempo, dato, postproducción e interacción directa e indirecta sobre lo sonoro. Este escrito plantea poner en valor y dar perspectiva a esos acontecimientos conceptuales a modo de aportación a la generación de un dibujo de lo sonoro que se transforma en musical y es mediado por lo tecnológico, lo computacional y la incidencia del dato como elemento virtuoso de esta formulación.
