This PhD thesis was mainly devoted to the set up of a new forming method, a combination of the sacrificial template technique and gelcasting, for the production of porous ceramic components for both environmental and biomedical applications. The innovative method is based on the gelation of a natural gelatine for food industry and polyethylene spheres were added to the ceramic slurry as sacrificial second phase. Before sintering the ceramic structure, the pore formers must be burnt out, yielding sphericallyshaped pores. The set up of the forming method was carried out on alpha-alumina-based materials, investigating the influence of many process parameters.
